The County of Hawaiʻi Mass Transit Agency administers taxi services in Hawaiʻi County. A listing of approved taxicabs in Hawaiʻi County is listed below. If you are interested in starting a taxicab in Hawaiʻi County, details and forms regarding the process is also listed below.

Taxicab Directory

Not all taxi cabs are approved to go to the airports, nor are participants of the Hele-On Shared Ride Taxi Program. For details on the participants, please visit the Hele-On Shared Ride Taxi Program page.

The authorized taxicab list is effective February 1, 2022.

Taxi Administration Fares

Effective November 2008

  • All fares are based on a meter rate. The current fares for taxicabs in Hawaiʻi County is $3.00 for the first 1/8 of a mile or one (1) minute waiting time or fraction of either.
  • It is then 40 cents for each additional 1/8 of a mile or one minute or fraction of either.
  • There is a fare of $1.00 for each piece of baggage, except for small bags such as train cases, briefcases and packages carried into the cab by the passenger.
  • There is a fare of $3.00 for each surfboard or bicycle.

The County of Hawaiʻi Mass Transit Agency is responsible to license and regulate the following for-hire vehicles:

  • Taxicab
  • Nonemergency Medical
  • Jitney
  • Charter
  • Low Speed Vehicle (LSV)
  • Sightseeing

County of Hawaiʻi Mass Transit Agency personnel determine owner eligibility; inspect vehicles; issue permits; monitor compliance with administrative and operational regulations; investigate passenger complaints and compliments. The Transportation Commission reviews, approves or denies all taxicab operator permits.

How to Start a Taxicab Operation in Hawaiʻi County

If you want to pay for your license fees or application for public conveyance, please download the order form. The Mass Transit Agency accepts cash, check and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, JCB, Diners Club, Apple Pay, Google Pay).
